L-Carnitine, a non-essential amino acid, is of crucial importance in energy production and fat burning.  The ideal supplement if you are looking for extra support for your stamina and fat burning.

L-Carnitine transports long chain fatty acids to the mitochondria, the cell's 'power plants', to burn them for energy production.

Although certain studies contradict each other, L-carnitine may improve performance and fat burning.

A recent survey (1) found that combining L-carnitine tartrate (the form of our L-carnitine supplement, 'CarniPure') with carbohydrates significantly increased performance compared to the use of only carbohydrates. The researchers noted that during the low intensity cycle the test subjects that took L-carnitine burned 55 percent less muscle glycogen , while fat burning was increased by 55 percent. During high-intensity cycling , atheltes who took L-carnitine had lower amounts of lactic acid and higher levels of creatine phosphate, one of the primary building blocks of ATP. This ensured that the subjects fatigued less quickly and could perform 25% longer.

Despite the fact that the L-carnitine was taken with a considerable amount of carbohydrates, no increase in fat was found in the test subjects. This was in contrast to the group that used only carbohydrates and gained on average 2.2 pounds in fat.

For those who are mainly interested in the fat-burning properties of l-carnitine, the combination of L-carnitine with Omega 3 fatty acids seems to be a good choice. A study (2) showed that taking this combination resulted in a significant reduction in the concentration of plasma-free fatty acids (-29%).

To promote endurance:

Take 2 grams of L-carnitine twice a day in combination with a meal rich in carbohydrates containing about 80 grams of carbohydrates.

To promote fat burning:

Take 1 to 3 grams of L-carnitine daily, preferably in combination with Omega 3 fatty acids.
